Abdel-Monem Mahmoud, young member of the Muslim Brotherhood and he is working in the media office of the group:
“The Muslim Brotherhood doesn’t aim at seizing power in Egypt. The senior and junior members of the MB seek to achieve reform. For the MB, seizing power now is extremely difficult for many reasons. So, in light of the current circumstances, all what we seek is reform. Senior members of the MB said that they agreed on the reform programme proposed by President Mubarak during last year’s presidential elections.”
“Reform for us is all about giving people political freedoms in the true sense of the word. Reform for us is enabling ordinary citizens earning their living in an honorable way.”
“As a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, my reference is the Islamic Sharia. In Egypt, socialism has been tried, and it failed. Also, capitalism has been adopted, and it also failed. So why don’t we try the Islamic Sharia? However, like any other way of governance, it has its own weaknesses. We want to apply Sharia in a way that appeals to all categories of society.”
“We have an established principle in Islam which is equivalent to democracy—it’s Shura. This means that we, as young MBs, firmly believe that the only way we can come to power is through ballot boxes. And if we came to power and didn’t live up to the electorate’s expectations, we would be removed from power also through ballot boxes. We will not remain in power for ever, or abuse it.”
“Concerning women liberties, we believe that it’s not our right, if we are in power, to impose veil on women. We will not adopt the Iranian model of dealing with women, i.e. I will not punish those who don’t wear veil. However, for me veil is a religious duty, but still I cannot impose it on them, for you cannot impose something on someone who is not convinced with the importance of this duty.”
“Concerning Copts, as any Egyptian citizen they have duties to perform, and rights to obtain. They are totally free to practice their religious rituals. I don’t think that Copts will disagree with our way of governance. However, from my own point of view, I will not allow a Copt to be the President of the Republic. I will do this by conducting a referendum on this issue. This is because Islam doesn’t allow a non-Muslim to be presiding over Muslims. The American constitution itself has a similar article, which stipulates that the president must be Anglican Christian. Will the American people accept a Muslim as their president? Definitely not. To sum it up, we believe in democracy, we support women liberties, and we support Copts to have their full rights.”
“In the future, we will work on institutionalizing the state.”
“In case the American administration continued its unfair policies in the Arab world in the future, we would cut all kinds of relations with it. This is because these policies negatively affect our country.”
“We will not recognize Israel, so there will be no relations whatsoever with it. And we will support the Palestinians to regain their occupied territories.”
“My political role in the future will be concentrated on fighting corruption and applying the Islamic Sharia. It will be also concentrated on achieving the welfare society.”
Yahya Sami, an Engineering student:
“The main concern of the older and the younger generations of the Muslim Brotherhood is to have an Islamic government. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the government be formed by the Muslim Brotherhood. In the meantime our main concern, as a young member of the MB, is to convince ordinary people of the advantages of the Islamic solution.”
“In the future, we will shoulder the responsibility of achieving reform, whether we came to power or not.”
“As for Copts, as all Muslims, they have duties to do and rights to have.”
“We want to apply Islamic Sharia. No body will complain if the Islamic government kill someone who murdered another one. No body will complain if we cut the hands of those who steal. The rules of Islamic Sharia, from my point of view, protect society from deviation.”
“Concerning our relation with the West, there will be no clash between us and them in case we came to power. But we will be against the American administration, not the American people, as long as it attacks Arab and Muslim countries. This administration helps achieve the Zionist, Israeli schemes in the Arab region. We will be anti Israel, and against any Western government that supports Israel. However, we will keep economic and scientific relations with them.”
“We will not impose any thing on the people. We will have people’s opinions on any issue by conducting referendums. We will not enact a law unless the majority of the people agree on it. We will also conduct referendums on changing some articles of the constitution.”
“In the meantime, my political role is concentrated in raising people’s awareness and trying to convince them of the benefits of the Islamic solutions. The people are apathetic, and my role is to help people give up this apathy and go for demonstrations to fight corruption. And in case the Muslim Brotherhood came to power, I would work hard for exporting our Islamic governance experience to other countries.”
“We will deal with Israel as an enemy, for it adopts expansive policies in the region.”
